Mr Demetris Skourides, Chief Scientist for Research, Innovation and Technology of the Republic of Cyprus, visited CL8’s Tier III-certified data centre in Limassol for a tour and discussion with the company’s management team.

The meeting considered Cyprus’s potential role in Europe’s growing artificial intelligence infrastructure and the EU’s AI Continent Action Plan. Particular attention was given to the country’s position at the eastern edge of the European Union and its potential to serve businesses operating between Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Energy was a central part of the discussion. Data centres and AI systems require significant and reliable power, making electricity costs and long-term energy planning important factors for the competitiveness of the sector. The participants discussed electricity market reform, renewable energy and energy storage, as well as the need for a coordinated national approach.

The meeting also covered the current capacity of Cyprus’s data centre market. While local infrastructure has expanded, attracting more international companies will be important to support future growth. The discussion considered the overseas markets that Cyprus may be best placed to serve and the factors that could make the country a credible regional location for data and technology operations.

The participants also exchanged views on AI hardware, including NVIDIA’s leading market position and the development of alternative providers such as Tenstorrent.

The visit concluded with a tour of CL8’s facilities and a closer look at the infrastructure supporting its data hosting, cloud and business continuity services.
